Livelihoods Carbon Funds (LCF) leverage the carbon finance to fund ecosystem restoration, agroforestry and rural energy projects with the aim of improving food security for rural communities and increasing farmers’ revenues.

The Livelihoods Carbon Fund 2 (LCF2) approved in 2018 a 20-year project to restore 5,109 ha of degraded mangrove ecosystems in the east coast of Aceh & North Sumatra. The project, implemented by Yayasan Gajah Sumatera (Yagasu), targets primarily disaffected aquaculture ponds, with the aim of establishing a silvo-fishery model allowing for the sustainable production of aquaculture products (shrimps, mud crabs and milkfish) while restoring productive mangrove ecosystems.

This study aims at evaluating the mangrove plantations undertaken in 2019 and 2020. It will be used by LCF2 and Yagasu to track project progress, and take corrective actions if necessary. The specific objectives of this study are:

  1. Verify the geographical locations and surface of the planted plots;
  2. Verify that the plantations meet the eligibility conditions contractually agreed between Livelihoods and Yagasu, including a specific silvofishery design for ponds;
  3. Estimate the survival rate of mangrove seedlings planted;
  4. Report the main mortality causes of mangrove seedlings.
